In my experience, suffering takes place by degrees. For instance, there is what’s known as “primary suffering” which refers to injuries inflicted upon us by others, as well as certain facts of life (e.g. illness). Then there is “secondary suffering” which stems from the spiritual maladies we sow for ourselves (e.g. the tyranny of addictions). With respect to this secondary type of suffering, forgiving ourselves can be extremely difficult because we have to assume maximum responsibility. Indeed, a man’s conscience is often a far graver punishment than any external agency might care to dole out! Yet love is the great redeemer, so long as the heart makes it welcome.

Thankyou Tony.
